Dr Muzaffar Jalal Khan Niazi- Legend of Anatomy
It was early 1937. I was two years old when I lost my father, who was a calligrapher at a news agency. I suffered a big psychological trauma. It was like a sword hanging over my head, the worst phase of my life.
Anyhow, years went by, I got admission at a nearby school. My family was not able to affoard my expenses.I would get beaten up by the teacher for month for not having the books untill one day he was compelled to ask me: "why was'nt I getting the books", the answer was simple, I had no money. 8 Aanay was a huge amount back then.
So, I decided to learn calligraphy. In my 5th grade, I had got an expertise in it and got a job at a news agency, where I've had to write whole news paper for 5 hours on daily basis.
It was the time when Pakistan movement was at its peak. I worked for Muslim League. My classmates and I used to go to Clock Tower (famous Ghanta-Ghar) Faisalabad to raise slogans, "Ban k Rahay ga Pakistan, Le k Rahen Gay Pakistan" "Pakistan ka Matlab kya, La Illaha Illa-Allah"
Best days of my life were about to come, I got admission at Nishtar Medical College, Multan. At day time I would study at college and at night I would be working at Daily Nawaiwaqt, Multan.
Things can only go too well for so long. It was'nt untill two yars after getting into NMC, my engagement was broken off. I was shattered. Eveything seemed to have lost its meaning. I would no longer bear my surroundings. I never had a knack for it but I ended up running!! running for miles on end. It worked well for me. Gradually the anxiety wore off, the only thing left was the stamina built. I picked up athletics to channelize my energy and bagged "Athlete of the year" at NMC and I scored 2nd place at "All Pakistan Inter-University Athletics held at Punjab University".
After passing out, I started working as Medical Officer at a Govt hospital at Chiniot, where I spent a period of 8 years. In 1974, I got inducted in Anatomy deptt of Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad. In a matter of months, I was elevated to the post of head of department. I was the youngest HOD of all. Inspite of becoming an HOD, I was always to be found in Dissection Hall (DH) teaching students. I would never leave my DH. It was like a second home to me. I served in 1971 war in Army medical corps as Captain.
1995 was the year, I retired from my job and moved to Lahore. Before finally ending up at Akhtar Saeed Medical College, I worked at various medical schools including Lahore Medical & Dental College and Sharif Medical & Dental College.
I have taught three generations of students, who are working all over the world. I would better like to call them as my sons and daughters. They are always keen to greet me everytime they see me. Its like your hard work and devotion finally getting paid off. Everytime I see them, I feel rejuvenated.
It gives me immense pleasure that I got nominated for "Devotion to Anatomy Award" at an International Conference on Anatomy held at Shalimar Medical & Dental College, Lahore.
I believe happiness is something that comes from helping others. As long as you feel you are serving others, you do your job well. When you are concerned only with helping yourself, you do it less well- a law as inexorable as gravity."
